Smoking and addiction

The WLS journey involves changing eating habits and controlling harmful addictions.

Weight loss surgery and smoking

Most surgeons will require patients to stop smoking, at least temporarily, to make weight loss surgery safer. Undergoing weight loss surgery entails making a range of lifestyle changes. It would be beneficial to health to stop smoking.

Weight loss surgery and addiction

Replacement addictions, also known as crossover addictions or substitute addictions, occur when individuals who have had weight loss surgery replace their food addiction with an addiction to something else. Starting to abuse alcohol is one example. A much healthier replacement for food addiction is to discover a new hobby or activity, such as exercise, blogging, crafts or gardening.

Please seek and follow the specific guidelines from your bariatric team. Guidelines vary for individual patient needs and surgeries.
